    Key Terms

    Bad News
    Unfavorable information that may disappoint, concern, or frustrate the reader.

    Buffer
    A neutral opening used in indirect organization to prepare the reader before bad news appears.

    Courteous Close
    A professional ending that maintains tone without repeating the bad news.

    Direct Organization
    A writing approach that presents bad news early, followed by explanation and a professional close.

    Indirect Organization
    A writing approach that prepares the reader before presenting bad news.

    Reasons
    Explanations that help the reader understand why the decision was made.

    Tone
    The attitude communicated through wording and sentence choice.
