After completing this reading, you should be able to:
- Identify and understand key dimensions of diversity.
- Recognize the importance of fostering diversity and inclusion in leadership practices.
- Understand the concept of inclusive leadership and its impact on communities and organizations.
Introduction
The interconnectedness of a diverse world demands effective leadership. A deep understanding of diversity, i.e., the coexistence of human differences (Ayoko & Fugimoto, 2024), is essential for creating equitable and thriving communities and organizations. This reading explores two aspects of leadership within communities and organizations: the dimensions of diversity based on the framework (Gardenswartz & Rowe, 2003) and inclusivity. These concepts provide insights into leading empathy and open-mindedness.
This chapter is taken from "Introduction to Leadership Concepts Handbook" by Seth D. Kastle, Lori E. Kniffin, Brett Whitaker, Justin Greenleaf, Brent Goertzen, Donnette Noble, and Tamas Kowalik, Open Educational Resources at FHSU Scholars Repository is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA.
- 7.1: Dimensions of Diversity
- This page explores Gardenswartz and Rowe's diversity framework, consisting of four identity layers: personality, internal dimensions (age, race, gender, sexual orientation), external dimensions (education, socioeconomic status), and organizational factors. It highlights how these dimensions interact and affect inclusivity. A vignette showcases Marsh Community Center's application of the framework to enhance its environment through diversity training and policy changes.
- 7.2: Inclusive Leadership
- This page covers inclusive leadership, emphasizing the importance of diversity, belonging, and empowerment. It highlights key elements like bias awareness, empathy, equity, collaboration, and advocacy for marginalized groups. A case study of the Rolling Hills Community Organization demonstrates the application of these principles, resulting in increased community involvement and showcasing the effectiveness of inclusive leadership practices.
- 7.3: Summary and References
- This page focuses on inclusive leadership, emphasizing the importance of awareness, empathy, equity, collaboration, and advocacy in fostering inclusive environments. It references the dimensions of diversity framework to illustrate how various factors shape individual experiences. Leaders are urged to embrace diversity and implement inclusive practices, adopting a holistic approach that meets the community's diverse needs and encourages a sense of belonging while driving positive change.
