This project grew out of my involvement with the UAA Textbook Affordability Fellows – a program that taught me the importance of Open Educational Resources. The result was Alaska Criminal Law, an adaption from an earlier work produced and distributed under a Creative Commons license (CC BY-NC-SA) by the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing through the eLearning Support Initiative. This edition has been substantially edited and revised to focus on Alaska and the Alaska Criminal Justice System. Like the original, this work is made available under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License.

I could not have undertaken this project without the help of numerous friends and colleagues during the process. First and foremost, I must acknowledge the tremendous help I received from Dr. Brad Myrstol, Professor of Justice and former director of the UAA Justice Center. Dr. Myrstol read (and re-read) multiple versions of this entire text over the better part of 18 months. His patience, advice, and edits were invaluable as I tackled this project.

I also owe significant gratitude to Leonard “Bob” Linton, former Anchorage District Attorney, who was gracious enough to share with me the Department of Law Instruction Manual associated with the 1980 Alaska Revised Criminal Code; Ken Rosenstein, former Alaska Solicitor General for the Department of Law, Criminal Division, for his thoughts and comments at the beginning of this project; and finally, Professor Chad Flanders, professor at Saint Louis University School of Law, who provided great insight and legal analysis on various parts of the text. I sincerely appreciate the help of everyone who helped me throughout.
