    Practical Exercise – Write a Story

    Actually, write three stories.

    The first is a story announcing you are taking this class. Often when a p.r. person takes a new job, the first thing they do is put out a press release announcing they have just joined XYZ in a specific capacity. So, write a story announcing you are in this class. Be sure to tell your reader about any background you may have that makes you especially qualified for this class.

    The second story is an obituary. Pick a historical person and write a 750-word obituary. You may base the obituary on a Wikipedia page, a book or something else. Be sure to tell me what your source is. The subject of your obit could be George Washington, George Washington Carver, Benjamin Franklin, Madam C.J. Walker, Eli Lilly, Harriet Tubman, or someone else.

    The third story is on the importance of writing for a career in public relations. For this story, go on the internet and find at least three posts by public relations agencies on why writing is crucial for a successful public relations career. From those three posts, write a story on the importance of writing to success in public relations. You can quote the agency this way: “LargoPR said.” Or “according to LargoPR.” Outside your story, give me links to your sources,

    Grading criteria for all three stories will include accuracy, use of the inverted pyramid style, and conformity to AP Style.

    All exercises should be submitted in Times New Roman 12 point type, double spaced. Be sure to put a slug line in the upper left hand corner of your paper with your name, topic and date.
