    Case Exercises

    Exercise A

Scenario: You support a campus or community program (student club, tutoring center, food pantry, cultural center, or nonprofit partner). You’ve been asked to create a one-page document that explains a service in a way that is clear for a diverse audience, including students who may be busy, commuting, working, or bilingual.

Prompt: Create a “Student Resource One-Pager” that explains how to access a campus/community support service (choose one: tutoring, food pantry, tech help, advising, mental health resources, scholarship support, or another approved service).

    Instructions (Microsoft Word):

    • Create a 1-page document with:

      • A clear title and two short sections (example: What this service is and How to use it).

    • Insert one graphic (choose one):

      • an icon, photo, or screenshot (example: a campus map snippet, a QR code image, or a service logo).

    • Insert one SmartArt graphic that shows a process or structure (choose one):

      • Process (steps to access the service), or

      • Cycle (repeat steps like weekly support), or

      • Hierarchy (who to contact first, second, third).

    • Add a caption under the graphic or SmartArt (example: “Figure 1: Steps to Access Tutoring”).

    • Format for readability:

      • Use headings, consistent font sizes, and spacing.

      • Ensure the page looks professional and easy to scan.

Deliverable: Submit one Word document (1 page) that includes at least one inserted graphic and one SmartArt visual.
    File name: Lastname_CaseStudy_GraphicsSmartArt.docx

    Exercise B

Scenario: You are working with a partner (classmate, supervisor, or stakeholder) to improve a short report before it is shared publicly. The topic affects students’ day-to-day experience, so accuracy and respectful wording matter.

Prompt: Create a 1–2 page “Student Experience Update” that summarizes a challenge students face and proposes a solution. Choose one topic: textbook affordability/OER, commuting or parking, campus food pricing/options, tutoring access, technology access, or bilingual communication on campus.

    Instructions (Microsoft Word):

    1. Create a 1–2 page report with these headings:

      • Issue

      • Evidence or Observations

      • Recommendation

    2. Turn on Track Changes and make at least 5 edits to your draft (example: rewrite a sentence for clarity, adjust word choice for respectful tone, fix formatting, add a heading).

    3. Insert at least 3 comments that show your thinking or questions (example: “Need a data point here,” “Is this wording clear for students who are new to campus?”).

    4. Demonstrate version history:

      • Save the document, then make a noticeable change (example: add a short paragraph or revise a recommendation).

      • Save again with a new version name (or, if using OneDrive/Word Online, confirm Version History is available).

    5. At the bottom of the document, add a short “Revision Note” (2–3 sentences) describing:

      • what you changed,

      • why you changed it,

      • and how feedback tools helped improve the document.

Deliverable: Submit one Word document (1–2 pages) with Track Changes visible, at least 3 comments, and a revision note referencing version history.
    File name: Lastname_CaseStudy_TrackChanges_VersionHistory.docx
